MARYSVILLE — Readers can expect this newspaper’s newest reporter to take a community-first approach to covering local sports.

Travis Sherer joined the staff of the Marysville Globe and Arlington Times Sept. 29 as both newspapers’ sports reporter.

Sherer will primarily report on high school sports for The Times and The Globe, but he will also write a weekly column.

The Everett resident, who has spent the past two years working as a sports information director and communications assistant for the University of Washington’s golf program, said the Marysville and Arlington communities have greeted him warmly.

Although he has not had a chance to meet all of the area coaches, he said he’s met a number of high school athletic directors.

“Everybody has been really helpful so far,” Sherer said.

In addition to his reporting and photography duties, Sherer will be writing a weekly column that will appear in both the Marysville Globe and Arlington Times.

“I hope to make a couple of people laugh, but it’s also a chance for people to get to know me,” Sherer said. “It gives people a clearer picture of who I am and gives me a chance to get to know some of the parents of the players.”

Sherer has also worked for The Lynden Tribune as a sports editor, so he has experience covering multiple schools for a weekly newspaper.

A Western Washington University graduate, Sherer served on a number of editorial and reporter positions within The Western Front student-run newspaper.

He’s also interned for the Bellingham Bells semi-professional baseball team and worked for The Bellingham Herald as a sports clerk.
