standout places at state
Arlington senior Ivana Krommelova capped off a spectacular season in her first season on the Eagles’ tennis team with a second-place finish in the 3A state tennis singles tournament.
After topping each of her opponents in conference play throughout the season and helping lead the Arlington tennis team to a 6-9 regular season record, Krommelova won her way through the singles bracket into a championship match against Kamiakin’s Brittney Reed. It was there Krommelova finally met her match as Reed defeated Krommelova, 6-1, 6-3.
Bryson to jump on regional stage
Post middle schooler Max Bryson hopes to follow up his big high jump at an upcoming USA Track and Field meet.
The eighth-grader, who jumped 6-5 at a season-ending meet, will compete in the Junior Olympic Pacific Northwest Association meet in Seattle,x June 21-22. The top five qualifiers go on to a meet in Spokane, and the top three there qualify for a finals meet in Nebraska.
Scheller to compete at basketball festival
M-P senior Blake Scheller has been invited to compete in the USA Junior Nationals International Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio from July 21-27 based on his performance in a basketball competition at Bellevue Community College.
Scheller, the son of Greg and Carey Scheller, started at point guard for the Tomahawks in 2007-08 as M-P placed second in conference play and went 1-2 in the district tournament, defeating Jackson in the opener.
According to their release, USA Junior Nationals is a program offered to high-level athletes who want to develop their skills and techniques through statewide, national and international competition.
Lakewood kicker will play college soccer
Lakewood senior Jeneca Hoidal has committed to play soccer at Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Ore.
The high school basketball and track standout will attend the NAIA Division II school on a combination of soccer, academic and leadership scholarships.
“I feel quite lucky to have had the opportunity to work with (ASB president) Jeneca as the ASB advisor and in other school arenas,” said assistant principal Matt Blair.
Eagle golfing grad earns national kudos
Arlington High School alum and University of Redlands (Redlands, Calif.) freshman Alex Hedlund helped his golf team compete for a second-place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championship Golf Tournament. Hedlund finished tied for 23rd place with 302 strokes at the Chateau Elan golf course in Georgia.
In addition, the 2007 graduate was selected as a third-team all-American.
Arlington football hosts fundraising tourney
The Eagle Open Golf Tournament to benefit Arlington High School football will take place July 27 at Gleneagle Golf Course.

Twin Rivers to host disc golf tourney
Action Sports will host disc golf tournaments at Twin Rivers Park in Arlington on upcoming weekends.
On first and third Saturdays of the month, singles play will take place, starting at 1:30 p.m. Doubles play will occur on second and fourth Sundays.
According to organizers, the tournament is open to teens and adults of all abilities with a $12 tournament entry fee.
Arlington church league hosts first all-star game
On July 1, Twin Rivers Park in Arlington will host the Greater Arlington Church Sports Fellowship League as the league puts on its first-ever Softball All-Star Game.
The nine-inning game is open to all teams, churches and community residents, according to organizers. For more information about the league or the all-star game, visit their website at www.gacsfl.org.
County Thunder host Tacoma
The Cascade Football League is underway, as the Snohomish County Thunder (Arlington) take on the Tacoma Invaders Saturday, June 14 at Arlington Middle School.
The Thunder, whose season kicked off April 26, wrap up their season, hoping to qualify for the league playoffs that begin June 19.
According to Thunder coach Mike Haggatt, players in the Cascade Football League do not lose college eligibility by playing in the league.
Expansion is planned for 2009 with new teams in Federal Way and Gray’s Harbor.
