MARYSVILLE — Lakey Malan graduated from Marysville-Pilchuck High School in 1997, but she never forgot her former choir teacher, Stuart Hunt, who taught choir at M-PHS from 1990-2002.
She’s betting that Hunt’s other students found him equally unforgettable, which is why she and other M-PHS choir alumni are organizing a reunion of Hunt’s students at the school Nov. 21 at 5 p.m.
“I had a lot of good teachers, but Mr. Hunt brought out the brightest and best parts of people,” Malan said. “We all came from different backgrounds, but he helped us put everything else aside to come together for a common goal.”
Although Malan now works as a bank manager, she credited her musical training under Hunt with instilling in her an attention to detail and an ability to work with teams that she believes have paved the way for her personal and professional successes as an adult. She still looks back fondly in her choir group’s travels to Idaho, Oregon, California and Canada, as well as the choir competitions that they “dominated.”
As Malan has made contact with Hunt’s fellow alumni, she reported that a number of them remarked on how touched they were by the respect he showed them.
The reunion is open to all of Hunt’s students, from 1990-2002, as well as to community members who have known him or simply want to honor him. It will include a potluck, songs by Hunt’s alumni and possibly even a talent show.
