The winners of the region’s 2009 Scholastic Art Awards have been announced by the Arts Council of Snohomish County and several Arlington and Marysville students have won Gold and Silver Key awards.
All entries will be on display Feb. 16 – 23 at the annex next door to the arts council’s gallery in the Historic Monte Cristo, 1507 Wall St., and the prize-winning artists will be honored at the Scholastic Art Awards Ceremony starting at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17 at the New Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Ave. with an opening reception from 5 – 9 p.m. at the annex.
Gold Key winners from Arlington and Marysville include Dale Cherrier and Heather Isgar of Arlington High School and June Nixon of Stillaguamish Valley School and from Marysville-Pilchuck High School, Emily Boerger, Sandra Cabadas, Kelly Dao, Stephanie Davey, Kayla Erskine, Jeremiah Gulfan, Javier Herrera, Samantha Miller, Jessica Peterson and Rachel Wheeler, who won two Gold Keys. A Marysville Arts and Technology High School student, Kelsey Laycock, also won a Gold Key award.
The exhibit will be open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Feb. 16, 10 a.m – 9 p.m. Feb. 17, 10 a.m – 8 p.m. Feb. 18 – 19, 10 a.m – 5 p.m. Feb. 20, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Feb. 21 – 22, and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23.
Silver Key winners from north county include Kellie Brem, Demi Miller, Helen Mohoff, Jillian Oberg, Shannon Perez, Rayann Queen, Nichole Worthing, of Arlington High School and Stillagaumish Valley School students Casey Engle, Kelsey Hauer, Ellen Long and June Nixon.
From Marysville-Pilchuck High School, Silver Key winners are Eddie Baronia, Jr. (2), Kelly Dao, Cheyenne Hanshaw, Thinh Hoang, Jordan Juarez, Meghan O’Brien, Tabitha Price, Cosette Troxel, Jorge Villavicencio, Rachel Wheeler. Two Arts and Technology High School students won Silver Keys, Kelsey Laycock, Jessica Wilkinson.
Following the exhibit, the American Vision Best of Show and Gold Key artwork will be sent in digital form to New York for the National Scholastic Art Awards program, said the arts council’s education coordinator, Nancy H. Bell.
The program gives thousands of students throughout America the opportunity to broaden their creative horizons while earning local and national recognition, Bell said.
“The objective is to foster the confidence of young artists and give them the opportunity to be recognized for their creative achievements by the world at large.”
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were founded in 1923 and have become the nation’s largest and longest running program of its kind. The Regional Scholastic Art Awards are co-sponsored by the Arts Council of Snohomish County, the Everett Cultural Commission, and Melby, Cameron & Anderson.
