TULALIP – A Totem Pole Blessing will take place Sunday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m. at the Greg Williams Gym, 6700 Totem Beach Road.
Also, War Canoe Races will take place both Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday.
Each of the past two years tribal members, led by Master Carver Jewell James of the Lummi Nation’s House of Tears Carvers, have carved and transported totem poles thousands of miles.
The goal has been to raise public awareness and strengthen opposition to the export of fossil fuels (coal and oil) from the West Coast of the United States and Canada.
“Taking from our mother earth is not our way,” a Tulalip Tribes poster says. “Join us in supporting Lummi as they begin their journey of protest.”
