The M-P Lady Tomahawks soccer team split their first two Wesco North league games to begin the month of October.
M-P defeated 3A Everett 1-0 Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Everetts Lincoln Field and then lost to the visiting Stanwood Lady Spartans Thursday, Oct. 5.
Thursday, Oct. 5, M-P dropped to 4-6-1 in league play and overall after being shutout by Stanwood 2-0 at Quil Ceda Stadium.
Stanwood improved to 8-1-2.
First-year head coach Geoff Kittle said the defeat was heartbreaking despite the effort put forth by his squad.
The girls played with a lot of heart and the breaks just didnt go our way, Kittle said.
We had several opportunities to equalize their early goal. One of the best came in about the 60th minute when Kassandra Riozzi sent a cross and Rebecca Muscatel barely missed the shot over the crossbar on a backside run.
M-P began the final month of regulation play on a winning note with a 1-0 victory over 3A Everett.
Junior forward Hannah Wood scored the games only goal against the Lady Seagulls and senior forward Devin Leatherman assisted.
Kittle said the girls approached the game with a lot of confidence.
It is nice to see that the girls established a winning trend against that team (Everett), Kittle said.
Kittle said with five games remaining, the coaching staff and players continue to have their sights set on postseason play.
We are still working on improving as a team. There is still another level of play that the ladies want to achieve. We are in control of our destiny as we play beatable teams in the next five games. We will focus one game at a time. We can still make the playoffs and that will keep us motivated going into next week.
M-P returns home Thursday, Oct. 12, to face the Lady Bearcats of Monroe. JV kicks off at 5 p.m. and varsity at 7.
