MARYSVILLE — With the start of the 2011-12 school year right around the corner, the annual “Summer Jubilee” is making another comeback to benefit Marysville School District students.
This year’s Summer Jubilee will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 20 at Allen Creek Elementary, located at 6505 60th Dr. NE, and Cascade Elementary, located at 5200 100th St. NE.
“Last year, we gave away about 5,000 school supply kits at Totem Middle School, 3,000 at Cascade and 1,000 at Shoultes Elementary,” said Vickie Evensen, assistant to the pastor of the Marysville United Methodist Church, one of the local churches sponsoring the Summer Jubilee. “We actually ran out of them at Totem and had to grab more from Shoultes.”
Evensen expects that almost as many school supply kits could be dispensed this year, with such kits typically including pencils, paper, crayons, markers and glue. Safety scissors and spiral notebooks have been included in years past, but backpacks have not been included in recent years due to how expensive they are.
“Anybody can show up to pick up a kit,” Evensen said. “There’s no screening process or anything like that.”
Summer Jubilee attendees will be able to grab free hot dogs and soda to go with their free school supplies, while the churches who are sponsoring the event will conduct carnival games and provide information on their programs, which includes “Kloz 4 Kids” at the Marysville United Methodist Church. School supplies will be handed out until they run out.
