MARYSVILLE – A three-point baseline shot by Colton Davis, followed by an old-school three-point play by Cameron Burns, ended a comeback attempt by Lakewood as Marysville Getchell beat the Cougars 54-44 Dec. 29.

Lakewood trailed 30-17 with 3:24 left in the third quarter after junior point guard Cody Day of MG made an acrobatic layup.

Then Matthew Keen got hot from the outside and helped the Cougars close to within 32-26 by the end of that period.

The teams fought to a standstill for the first half of the last period, with MG’s pressing zone defense and Lakewood’s tight man-to-man defense causing turnovers for both teams.

But when Lakewood triple-teamed Burns inside, he passed to a wide-open Ian Roskelley on a back-door cut.

Lakewood cut the lead to the closest it had been since early in the game when Sean Dawson scored to make it 39-35 with 3:01 remaining.

But then MG went on a 10-0 run, thanks to Davis and Burns, to put the game out of reach at 49-35 with 1:20 left.

MG, which was at least a few inches taller at every position, got off to a fast start leading 13-3 after the first quarter. Two put-back shots by Burns in the second quarter after grabbing offensive rebounds led the home team to a 23-13 halftime lead. In the third quarter, an offensive rebound by Lakewood’s 6-3 sophomore Austin Lane was followed by a three-point play by Burns after driving to the hoop and connecting on a free throw.

Lakewood couldn’t hit from the outside, and when it did penetrate the Cougars were plagued by turnovers. Neither team shot well from the free-throw line, especially late in the game. MG was 14-24 and Lakewood 10-20.

Burns, a senior forward, led the Spartans with 18 points, followed by Davis and junior Collin Montez with 8 each, Day with 7, Roskelley and Caleb Koellmer with 5 each, David Koncoski with 2 and Taylor Koellmer with 1.

Keen was the game’s high scorer with 19 for Lakewood, followed by Dawson with 9, David Le with 5, Tyrell Coleman and Sam Linscoth with 4 each, Lane with 2 and Adam Duran with 1.
