Marysville’s renowned basketmakers Judy Zugish and Bill Roeder are included in the extensive list of names to be showing their work at the Arts Council of Snohomish County’s “Containers, Containment and Contents” featuring members of the Northwest Designer Craftsmen and the Northwest Basket Weavers.
This exhibit is part of a regional event celebrating the art of contemporary craft and basketry, according to gallery director Carie Collver.
It is planned in correlation with the traveling exhibition “Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and David Lieberman Collection” that is on display at the Bellevue Art Museum through March 22, 2009.
The Northwest Basket Weavers Guild has been promoting the art and tradition of basketry since 1982. Its mission is to study, share and practice weaving techniques, to gather and use native materials, to identify, collect and appreciate basketry, and to promote the art of basketry to the public.
Almost three dozen members will be participating in this exhibit including: Sally Anaya, Mary Etue Auld, Danielle Bodine, Heidi Brewer-Peters, Joan Carrigan, Joyeanna Chaudiere, Donna Cochran, Deb Curtis, Kathey Ervin, Jill Green, Kay Harradine, Mary Irvine, Marcy Johnson, Alex Keggan, Sharon Kita, Kaye Lervick, Katherine Lewis, Jeannie McFarland, Dorothy McGuinness, Claudia Mullek, Sharle Osbourne, Bill Roeder, Leon Russell, Sue Skelly, Mary Snowden, Polly Sutton, Melanie Thompson, Elaine Twogood, Melinda West, Sylvia White, Carol Williams, Sheila Wray and Judy Zugish.
The Northwest Designer Craftsmen was founded in 1954 to promote excellence of design and craftsmanship and to stimulate public appreciation and interest in fine craft. Artists in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska, who work professionally in clay, wood, glass, metal, fiber, and/or mixed media, are members.
More than 24 members will be participating in the Everett exhibit: Barbara Barnes Allen, Lanny Bergner, Danielle Bodine, Virginia Causey, David Chatt, Nancy Clarke Hewitt, Ginny Conrow, Pricilla Cypiot, Linda Frizzel, Zia Gipson, Noble Golden, Carol Gouthro, Deborah Gregory, Katherine Holzknecht, Lois James, Tina Koyama, Linda McFarland, Dorothy McGuinness, Agnes McLin, C.A. Michel, Carol Milne, Jill Nordsfors Clark, Donna Pritchard, Leon Russell, Scott Schuldt, Delores Taylor, Jean Tudor, Hannah Voss, and Barbara J. Walker.
“Containers, Containment, and Contents,” will open with a “Meet the Artists” reception from 5 – 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 9 at 1507 Wall Street, Everett.
Basketmakers, Katherine Lewis and Barbara J. Walker) will be demonstrating some of their techniques at the opening.
The Arts Council Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
