TULALIP — “Tulalip Days” is returning to the Tulalip Reservation on Aug. 27, complete with the Tulalip Parade that’s part of its annual tradition.

The parade will start at 10 a.m. on Aug. 27 and will pass by 6700 Totem Beach Rd., where the rest of the “Tulalip Days” activities will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Tulalip Days” started two years ago, but has its roots in long-standing Tulalip Tribal customs, including the Labor Day pow wow that the Tribes had discontinued more than a decade before.

Prior to the first “Tulalip Days” in 2009, the parade had been held for eight years in conjunction with the Tribes’ salmon ceremony, but the Tribes wanted to return the salmon ceremony to a more intimate cultural gathering.

Close to 40 groups showed up that first year, with floats and marchers including the Marysville and Tulalip police departments and fire districts, Marysville Strawberry Festival Royalty, the Marysville School District, the Marysville-Pilchuck High School Marching Band, the Marysville Historical Society, the Lushootseed Department, the Tulalip Fish Hatchery, the Tulalip health and dental clinics, the Tulalip Resort Casino and various Tulalip veterans and elders.

This year’s cultural events will allow visitors to make their own drums, necklaces and shawls, as well as to watch films on Tribal history, including the boarding schools.
