Northbound I-5 traffic woes could be worse this weekend

MARYSVILLE – Traffic tie-ups on northbound I-5 and in town could be even worse than in previous weekends because of other road projects.

MARYSVILLE – Traffic tie-ups on northbound I-5 and in town could be even worse than in previous weekends because of other road projects.

All lanes of northbound I-5 will be closed early Friday morning from 1-3 as the Tulalip Tribes will be moving a large construction crane across the interstate to continue work on the new overpass.

Overnight lane closures actually will start Thursday night, April 28, for restriping. Lanes will be narrowed to replace expansion joints on the Ebey Slough bridge.

The Highway 529 ramp will merge directly onto I-5. The Highway 529 lane will be eliminated. The exit-only lane to 4th Street will be eliminated. Drivers will only be able to exit to 4th Street in the right lane. Those conditions will last at least through May 10.

Weekend work begins at 9:30 Friday night as northbound I-5 will go down to two lanes.

The state Department of Transportation continues to ask motorists to use alternate routes.

“With the added closure of the SR 529 ramp on the weekends, expect backups to spill onto city streets,” DOT traffic engineer Mike Swires said.
