Although it read 28-9 in Snohomishs favor, the Tomahawk football team put up a sizable fight, only to watch the game get away from them late in the second half.
Despite a bigger-than-usual home crowd at Snohomish to honor former coach Dick Armstrong, M-P coach Brandon Carson said hes not a big believer in the home-crowd factor.
We matched their intensity, for sure, Carson said after the game.
M-P junior kicker Elwood Sevon connected on two field goals in the first half, and at halftime, the Tomahawks were down just 7-6. On the opening drive of the third quarter, they scored again to lead 9-7.
Although Snohomish scored again, M-P kept it close. The Tomahawks had possession of the ball with the score 14-9, but ultimately mistakes kept them from retaking the lead.
We had chances to score, but we made too many mistakes, Carson said. The team that made the fewest mistakes won. Unfortunately, that was not us.
M-P struggled to find the end zone. On one play, the Tomahawks drove from their own two-yard line to the red zone, only to be frustrated by the Snohomish defense. Its something Carson said he wants the team to work on.
We moved the ball well. We just couldnt punch it in the end zone, he said. Weve got to get better at our red-zone offense.
The team hopes to get a W under their belt when they face Everett at home Sept. 14, but Carson definitely does not want the team to be looking past the game.
Everetts a solid team. They play good defense, he said. They had a good battle against Cascade, one of the better teams in our league. Well have to play some good offense to beat them.
