MOUNT PILCHUCK – The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit says Mount Pilchuck is not an easy hike for those who aren’t well-trained as SAR has responded to four rescues in seven days. Two people had serious injuries.
SAR Sgt. Danny Wikstrom snow has made the trail slippery. And three people were not dressed or equipped for the conditions.
Wikstrom offered these tips:
•Carry the 10 essentials, including a map and compass.
•Stay on the trail.
•Only hikers who have the training and equipment to traverse snow fields and who are prepared for changing conditions should make the trip.
•Do not rely on your cellphone as there is little coverage. Leave a hiking plan behind.
The recent SAR incidence include:
•June 8 – A woman who was well-equipped for the hike slipped on snow at approximately 4,800 feet and sustained a leg injury. •June 11 – A 19-year-old man broke through the snow, fell and dislocated his shoulder. •June 11 – A 27-year-old man got lost. Hours later, he made it back to the trailhead. •June 12 – A 20-year-old woman became separated from her hiking partner and called 9-1-1. She was about 400 yards off-trail on a dangerous snow slope. She was treated for mild hypothermia.
