TACOMA — Yareli Ochoa of Lakewood was our only local state champion, but many others won medals at the state 3A and 2A Track Championships at Mount Tahoma High School last weekend. Ochoa stood atop the podium on the first day of competition, winning the high jump with a mark of 5-feet, 4 inches.
Ochoa also had the second-best mark of any local athlete, placing second in the long jump at 17 feet, 7.75 inches.
She also was 14th in the 100, but the winner was only a half-a-second ahead in the very close race.
Campbell Hudson of Arlington took third place in the 300-meter hurdles, with his clocking of 39.95 seconds. He also placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.2 seconds.
Jon Cox of Lakewood was third in the shot put with a toss of 53 feet, 9 inches.
Paige Shimkus of Lakewood also took a third, in the javelin with a throw of 136 feet, 9 inches.
Marine Wassmer of Arlington took a fourth place in the 300 hurdles, with her time of 44.82 seconds.
In the boys javelin, Gabriel Green placed fifth with a throw of 166 feet, 3 inches. Teammate Kristian Fairback was 13th at 163-7.
Camden Burbee of Lakewood was fifth in the boys discus with a mark of 154 feet, 8 inches. Teammate Cole Nelson was 10th in 141-2.
Spencer Solvberg of Lakewood was sixth in the 800 with a time of 1:57.17.
Julia Parra of Arlington finished sixth in the discus with her throw of 119 feet, 11 inches. Parra also was sixth in the shot put, with a mark of 39 feet.75 inches. Mikail Montez of MG was 17th with her throw of 36 feet, .5 inches.
Lakewood’s Dylan Madan placed seventh in the pole vault at 13 feet.
Gregory Panther of MG was seventh in the 800 meters with his clocking of 1:59.04. Placing seventh in the 4 by 400 meters was Arlington’ team of Hudson, Daylin Pierce, Cade Younger and Peter Curtis in 3:26.28.
Finishing eighth in a time of 43.42 seconds in the 4 by 100 meter relay was Lakewood’s team of Spencer Fleming, Jordan Gonzalez, George Toponce and Michai Harris 11 Cade Tucker of Marysville-Pilchuck was eighth in the shot put with a heave of 56 feet, 6.5 inches. Kobe Gray of Arlington placed eighth in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet.
The rest of the locals at state didn’t place, but Jeffrey Roullier of M-P just missed in the discus getting ninth. Michael Van Beek of Arlington was 14th.
Also placing ninth was Arlington’s 4 by 400 relay team of 4 by 400 Reise Walker, Jensyn Smith, Kelsey Mutton and Wassmer.
Arlington’s 4 by 200 relay team also just missed making the finals, against placing ninth. That team consists of Sarah French, Jersey Heiss, Mutton and Wassmer Trina Davis of M-P was 10th in the 100, with Kiarra Green of MG 16th.
Davis was 11th in the 200, Green 14th and Wassmer 15th.
Summer Sanden of M-P was 11th in the high jump at 5 foot 1 inch.
In the 400, Peter Curtis of Arlington was 12th in 51 seconds.
In the girls pole vault, Lauren Carson of M-P was 12th with a mark of 10 feet 6 inches. Placing 12th in 3:30.75 in the 4 by 400 relay was MG’s team of Thomas McCormick, Ryan Hascall, Conrad Tatge and Panther.
Mutton was 13th in the 800 in 2:18.32.
Lakewood’s Machai Harris was 17th in the 100 in 11.22.
MG’s 4 by 200 relay team of Sophie Alt, Tyshona Cole, Alexandra Sapp and Green placed 17th.
