MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Soroptimist and Kiwanis students of the month for this school year have included students from the Marysville-Pilchuck and Marysville Getchell high schools.
M-PHS seniors Andrea Adams and Sam Josephsen were named the students of the month for September, while fellow M-PHS seniors Mark Blankenship Jr. and Lindsay Martinez were named the students of the month for October. From the Marysville Getchell campus, Bio-Med Academy senior Tylor Klep and School for the Entrepreneur senior Meghan O’Brien were named the Marysville Soroptimist and Kiwanis students of the month for November.
Adams has served as the M-PHS junior class president, senior class vice president, varsity basketball captain and coronation chair. She’s been a “Big Buddy,” helped summer school students at Shoultes Elementary, and volunteered at the Everett Gospel Mission and the Operation Night Watch homeless shelter in Seattle.
Josephsen has served as the M-PHS sophomore class historian and as the public relations chair for ASB. Like Adams, Josephsen has mentored freshmen, taken part in “You Gotta Love This Place” and volunteered at the Marysville Community Food Bank, and he’s also contributed his time and efforts to the “Miracle on State Street” for local needy families, the city’s Halloween fun fest and Easter egg hunt, and the M-PHS Oktoberfest.
Blankenship has been active in the M-PHS Naval Junior ROTC program in a variety of roles since his freshman year, and currently serves as its commanding officer. He’s also served as president of the school’s National Honor Society, worked 10-15 hours a week at the Polo Ralph Lauren store for two years as an award-winning sales associate, and has received an NJROTC scholarship to one of five possible schools, including the University of Washington.
Martinez has served as the ASB sophomore class activities chair, junior class secretary and senior class president, as well as a delegate to the Mt. Triumph and Mt. Rainier leadership conferences in her sophomore and senior years, respectively. She’s also captained the M-PHS junior varsity volleyball team as a sophomore, co-chaired the school’s “Walk of Honor” as a junior and emceed its “Welcome Back” assembly as a senior.
Klep currently serves as president of the Bio-Med Academy’s Biotechnology Club and as vice president of the Marysville Getchell campus, and has worked to create a fight song for the school in the latter role. For the past two years, he’s pitched in at the Marysville Rotary’s annual pumpkin patch fundraiser, and in 2010, he’s volunteered at the M-PHS youth football camp and as a camp counselor at the Kellogg Marsh Elementary fifth-grade Cedar Springs Camp.
O’Brien currently serves as vice president of the School for the Entrepreneur and president of the school’s Future Business Leaders of America, as well as the editor of its yearbook. For two years, she was a member of the Marysville Getchell ASB Planning Committee, and she’s taken part in both M-PHS and Marysville Getchell food drives. She also attended the FBLA State Business Leadership Conference in 2008 and National Leadership Conference in 2010.
