MARYSVILLE – The Survivor Lap at every Relay for Life is special.
That’s when people who beat cancer walk around the track as other participants cheer their success.
But that lap at the Snohomish County Relay for Life Saturday at Asbery Field was extra special because it included a celebrity.
Seattle rapper Wanz helped hold the survivor sign during the lap. Wanz was celebrating being one year cancer free.
Wanz is best-known for being part of Macklemore’s mega hit “Thrift Shop.”
Relay director Katie Tormohlen said she was pleased that the relay was moved this year closer to downtown so it would gain more attention. She also liked the so many other communities were involved this year.
The relay so far has raised almost $100,500. The goal was $175,000. People can still donate by going to the website.
Wenz was part of the Kickin It For Cancer team that led donations with almost $16,000. Next was Hall Roadsters with almost $8,500, Relay Rascals at almost $7,500, Aunties Angels and a Few Uncles too at a little more than $7,000 and Dawn’s Mafia at a little over $5,000.
The leading individual was Linda Clark with just over $4,000, while Wal Mart was the biggest business contributor at almost $7,600.
Evalyn Carter, 5, of Marysville was there, and her favorites were the Critters, folks dressed in very warm animal costumes on the 80-plus degree day.
There was some added excitement early Saturday when a gust of wind picked up a few of the tents used by the different teams. Apparently stakes are not allowed on the field to hold them down. So participants held on to their poles during the gust to try to keep the tents from flying away.
