The 10th annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign once again found plenty of drivers and their passengers without seatbelts fastened or engaging in other dangerous activities in Snohomish County.

“Although Washington state’s mandatory seatbelt law has been in effect since 2002, some drivers are still choosing not to buckle-up themselves as well as their children,” said Tracy McMillan, manager of the Snohomish County DUI & Target Zero Task Force.

This year’s campaign included 31 local law enforcement agencies from King, Pierce and Snohomish Counties. All told, 172 police officers and sheriff’s deputies stopped more than 2,100 motorists in the three counties.

In Snohomish County, five agencies received grant funding for the Washington Traffic Safety Commission’s “Click It or Ticket” traffic safety campaign through the Snohomish County DUI and Target Zero Task Force. The cities of Marysville, Everett, Lynnwood, Mukilteo, and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office participated.

Officers and deputies in Snohomish County worked a total of 135.5 overtime hours between May 21 and June 3. During these highly visible and multi-jurisdictional patrols they contacted 476 drivers to remind them about traffic safety laws. There were 138 vehicle occupants who were given infractions for not wearing a seatbelt as well as seven drivers who were cited for not having their children in proper car or infant seats.

“Although speed and alcohol-related crashes are killing the most people on our roadways, distracted driving is also a huge problem,” said McMillan. During the campaign there were 83 drivers cited for talking or texting on their cell phones.

In addition, 20 drivers were cited for suspended or revoked licenses, and 51 drivers were cited for lacking proof of insurance.
