Four local girls made the cut after the first day of their respective state golf tournaments Tuesday.
Freshman Malia Schroeder of Lakewood was tied for ninth with an 81 at the 2A tourney at Meadow Wood Golf Course. The leaders were at 74.
In the 3A state tourney at Hawks Prairie Golf Course Natalia Zieroth of Marysville-Pilchuck shot an 85, tying her for 21st. Arlington’s Grace Metcalf and Mailinh Vu were tied for 32nd, both shooting 89. The leader was at 67.
Meanwhile, for the boys, Matt Allen of M-P and Alex Coghill of Arlington qualified for state at the 3A District 1 Championship at Avalon Golf Links.

At districts, Allen shot a 78 his first round and 82 his second for a combined total of 160. Coghill shot an 88-81 for a 169 two-day total. In the 2A District 1/2 Championship at Skagit Golf and Country Club, Schroeder shot an 81-83 for a 164 two-day total to qualify for state.
Last week, Arlington was fourth, M-P sixth and MG seventh at the Wesco 3A North Divisional boys match at Whidbey Country Club.

The Cougars will play Ridgefield at 10 a.m. Friday in Selah in the State 2A Softball Tournament.
Lakewood is 18-3 after falling to Sehome 2-0 in the district title game. The Cougars had just beaten the Mariners three weeks ago 3-0 on a no-hitter by Riley Mae Swanson.
The Cougars have outscored their opponents this year 214-57, while Ridgefield, with a record of 16-4, relies more on its pitching, outscoring foes 146-32.
Not only is Swanson Lakewood’s top pitcher, she also leads the team in batting with an average of .597. The team’s batting average of about .380 is better than the Spudders, who average about .350.
Their top hitter is Mariella Newell, who bats .433.
