MARYSVILLE – The Marysville Globe placed third in the largest circulation category in the state for weekly newspapers at the WNPA Convention in Olympia last week.

Judges said the Globe had the best photography and editorials of all the entries in that classification. The Globe won a total of eight awards.

“It feels good to be recognized for the work we do,” Globe managing editor Steve Powell said.

The Arlington Times won two first-place awards in Category 3 – one for its web site and the other for reporter Doug Buell’s crime and court story for Arlington’s embedded social worker program.

The Globe placed second for its web site.

Buell combined with Powell to place second in Business reporting. Judges said their story on businesses’ need for workers during low unemployment was “timely and valuable.”

Powell took a second in sports photography with a shot from last winter’s state 3A basketball tournament at the Tacoma Dome. “Great shot, framed well with lights, ball and subject. Emotions show intensity of the moment,” judges said.

Powell also won four third-place certificates.

One was for sports personality profile on the Challenge League in Arlington. “This is a touching story that shines a light on families making the best out of difficult situations,” judges said.

Of a government story on farm tariffs, judges wrote: “Beautifully written story on a localized national issue that gets right to the point, without sacrificing the art of storytelling.”

The other stories were: For Lifestyle feature, Girls are Boy Scout Trailblazers, and, for personality profile, the Baxter family in Lakewood that is heavily involved in wrestling.
