Tommies need to win two straight to get into state

EVERETT — It’s do-or-die for the Tommies at Everett Memorial Stadium May 12.

Marysville-Pilchuck let a few small mistakes snowball into a four-run third inning and a 7-0 loss May 11 against Mountlake Terrace.

“A couple of close calls and a mistake and a couple of plays just out of our reach and we look up and it’s 5-0,” said M-P manager Kurt Koshelnik.

The Tommies had a hard time on the diamond versus the Hawks, and not making it easier was pitcher Andrew Woeck, who took a no-hitter just under five innings and finished allowing just two while striking out 10.

“We ran into a pitcher that had the best stuff we’d seen all season,” Koshelnik said. “It was just one of those games.”

The loss pits the Tommies against a Shorewood team that ended Lake Stevens’ season with a 9-8 earlier in the tournament.

“We don’t know much about them because we don’t play anybody in the (Wesco) South, but we do know that they have some good arms, so it’s going to be another battle,” said Koshelnik.

Woeck earned the win while M-P senior Brennan Steinbaugh took the loss for M-P.

The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium with the winner getting a chance to play the winner of the Monroe vs. Jackson contest for District 1’s third and final state berth on Saturday.
