Red Curtain cancels play
MARYSVILLE – Red Curtain has canceled its May production of “Once Upon a Mattress” due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.
Its board of directors also has decided to postpone the production of “The Rememberer,” which was scheduled to run April 10-26, until the 2020-21 season.
Also, registrations for Springboard (beginning May 11) and Summer Stars (beginning July 6) are also suspended, although we are hopeful that these two programs can take place as planned, Beckye and Scott Randall said in a news release.
Because of Red Curtain’s limited cash reserves, and the loss of projected income over the next few months, we are simply unable to offer refunds for season ticket holders for the two shows, they said. However, those tickets will be valid for a play next season.
Due to the loss of income, the Randalls and Red Curtain are asking for donations to help them pay bills during these troubling times.
Lakewood pulls back on levies
LAKEWOOD – The school board has decided not to re-run levies in the April 28 special election because the cornonavirus would not allow them to have meaningful discussions with the community.
The two measures were defeated in February.
By state law, school districts are given two chances to pass levies in a calendar year. That means the district could try in August or November.
Superintendent Scott Peacock said that following the February election, the district started preparing for potential budget cuts next school year. The levies cover the cost of programs, services and staff not funded by the state.

Historical Society cancels fundraisers, seeks donations
MARYSVILLE – The Marysville Historical Society is asking the public for donations as it has had to cancel its 17th Annual Spring Tea and Silent Auction Fundraiser.
Spring Tea coordinator Dawn Robertson said the only funds brought in for the volunteer-run museum come from event rentals and the spring tea. Every year the spring tea raises enough money to maintain operating costs throughout the year. Last year it was $10,000.
“Without this fundraiser, the Marysville Museum is in financial strain,” she said.
They are exploring online auction ideas and “hope that we can have small events at the museum and auction some of the wonderful donations and items.”
Everyone who has sent in payment for tea tickets will not be charged.
