Cougar football wins big at home

LAKEWOOD — Sophomore Justin Lane and senior Jordan Stauffer share a friendship that is rare between a quarterback and his receiver. Not only do they value each other’s companionship but they also know their strengths.

This showed as the Lakewood Cougars thrashed their Cascade Conference opponent, the Coupeville Wolves, 42-6, Oct. 17. Lane and Stauffer connected five times for 142 yards and four touchdowns.

Lakewood coach Dan Teeter wasn’t surprised with their performance. “They (Lane and Stauffer) worked really hard in the off-season. They are talented men and I don’t see why they can’t achieve their goals in post-high school football as well.”

This game was won by a full team effort, as both players and coaches credited the offensive line and the fullback for stepping up and allowing enough time for passes to be complete. Also, with an almost shutout score, the defense made stops and gave the offense great positioning of the ball.

Lakewood’s first score came off a Lane two-yard run four minutes into the game. Lane finished the game with 17-for-27 passing which resulted in 233 yards. He had five passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. After that, Stauffer lit up the scoreboard and the stat sheet with four touchdowns in the second and third quarters. Senior Quinton Baldwin also scored off a Lane pass in the second quarter.

Coupeville kept fighting the whole way and with four minutes remaining in the game, they scored off an 11-yard touchdown pass. Fortunately for Lakewood this game was out of reach.

Coach Teeter explained that his team was “loose with each other. They enjoy being around each other and sing songs in the locker room. They keep their heads up and stay positive, even with our record being not so great.”
