The Lady Tomahawks soccer team went 1-1-1 in a busy week of Wesco North league action Sept. 26-30.
Saturday, Sept. 30, they lost 3-1 to the visiting Lady Panthers of Snohomish at Quil Ceda Stadium.
Junior forward Melissa Lauer scored lone goal for M-P with an assist from classmate Kassandra Riozzi.
Head coach Geoff Kittle said his team reached their goal of winning the second half, but were unable to contain the hat trick of Ashley Tombelaine.
It felt good to score on them, but it was disappointing that we allowed them to score three unanswered goals in the first half, Kittle said.
The loss dropped M-P to 3-5-1 in league play and overall and Snohomish improved to 5-3-1, 5-3-1.
This season we put together two good halves out of the four against them (Snohomish). It would have been nice if they were both in the same game. At this point, we just have to move on and focus on Everett.
The Lady Tomahawks soccer team got back on the winning track Thursday, Sept. 28, against Wesco North foe Oak Harbor. Both the junior varsity and varsity squads dispatched of the Lady Wildcats by identical 4-0 scores at Quil Ceda Stadium under a sliver of a moon.
M-P improved to 3-4-1 in league and overall while O.H. fell to 0-2-5.
Oak Harbor took the first shot of the varsity game seven minutes into play and even though junior M-P goalkeeper Skyler Peterson made the save, she suffered a bruise on her ankle in the ensuing collision.
Approximately 30 seconds later, junior forward Hannah Wood scored the games first goal from the right side of the net for an early 1-0 M-P advantage.
The Lady Tomahawks received one yellow warning card, which seemed to be a sign of less aggressive play than their last game against Arlington when the two teams combined for a handful of cards.
Junior forward Melissa Lauer just eluded the O.H. goalkeeper and found the back of the net with 18 minutes remaining in the first half to increase M-Ps lead to 2-0.
M-P continued to pressure the O.H. defenders throughout the first half, but ended up settling for a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Wood tallied her second goal of the game five minutes into the second half and increased the hosts lead to 3-0.
Not to be outdone, junior midfielder Kassandra Riozzi got on the scoreboard with a rifle of a shot from about 30 yards away that saw the O.H. goalie stop the ball before falling backward with momentum.
Riozzis goal with 18 minutes remaining made it 4-0, which proved to be the final score.
Peterson was replaced at goal by junior Victoria White with approximately 16 minutes remaining.
Wood was all smiles in her letterman jacket and said she felt the team did awesome.
I think we dominated Oak Harbor tonight and we are ready to dominate Snohomish here on Saturday (Sept. 30), she said. We came out knowing we could win tonight. I am really excited about Snohomish. We only lost 1-0 earlier this season, but this is going to be in our house and were going to go home winners.
Head coach Geoff Kittle said his team is coming to a crossroads and described the game as a kind of must win night.
It was good to see us score first tonight, Kittle said of their success against O.H. after playing a scoreless double overtime game against Arlington.
It would have been easy for the Lady Tomahawks varsity soccer team to overlook the Lady Eagles Tuesday, Sept. 26. After all, their junior varsity squad had just dispatched of Arlingtons JV 5-0. Little did those in attendance at John C. Larson Stadium know, 4A
M-P and 3A Arlington would battle through 90 minutes of scoreless action.
With the tie, M-Ps record improved to 2-4-1 in league play and overall.
Arlington now stands at 1-5-1 in the Wesco North league.
Junior goalkeeper Skyler Peterson officially saved 10 shots in her first personal shutout.
The physical and aggressive game resulted in a handful of yellow cards issued from the young referee only one at the hands of the Lady Tomahawks.
Junior midfielder Kassandra Riozzi was flashed a caution card approximately 13 minutes into the second half of play.
What for? she asked the referee to no avail.
M-P first-year head coach Geoff Kittle said Arlington played with a lot of heart and determination.
Theyre the toughest Arlington soccer team weve seen in years, Kittle said.
He told his squad that overtime is all about heart, and who has the most remaining in their competitive tank.
You have to be aggressive. Someone tonight is going to step up. You have to decide who it will be, he said.
Peterson said the shutout had a rather bittersweet feeling.
Overall I felt pretty good out there, Peterson said. Our defense was strong. We had some good opportunities inside the 18-yard box (goalkeepers penalty box). It was my personal goal to get a shutout, but it would have been better if it came with a win.
M-P returns home Thursday, Oct. 5, to face the Lady Spartans of Stanwood. JV begins at 5 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
