Marysville uses the longball to squeak by Mariners

MARYSVILLE — The Tommies saw a little bit of everything en route to their first win.

In a 10-9 nonconference victory over Sehome, March 17, Marysville-Pilchuck’s baseball team swung a big stick, but had trouble closing out the game.

“I think it was good to get the win, and it was an exciting game,” said M-P manager Kurt Koshelnik.

Sehome struck first, getting a run in the second inning off three hits, but M-P responded with 10 unanswered runs over the next three innings. The Tommies scored two in the third with Kyle Novach and Adam Sylvester coming around to score their first of three runs apiece in the game.

But it was in the fourth inning where the Tommies flexed their muscles, starting with Riley McKinley, who turned on a fastball and took it over the left field wall. He was followed by Novach, a sophomore, who did the same.

“There are some kids on this team than can lose a ball or two if they get a hold of one,” said Koshelnik. “But that’s not what we’re relying on offensively.”

The two solo shots started a four-run inning. In the fifth, it was senior Tylor Klep’s turn to go yard, as he hit a two-run homer over the centerfield wall.

“When it’s the two smallest guys on the team (hitting home runs), it kind of makes you feel bad about yourself,” said Klep. “But it was good to get the rust off.”

Klep finished the game going 2-for-3 a homer, a double, four RBIs and two runs scored.

While M-P was doing all of its damage, reliever Zach Williams came in and provided a bright spot on the mound, pitching through the third and fourth inning with just one baserunner while striking out two.

“I was excited for Zach to come out there and throw that well in his first varsity game,” said Koshelnik.

Getting the win for the Tommies was starter Zach Thomas, who pitched three innings, striking out four and walking a pair.

Novach finished the game going 2-for-3 with a walk while Sylvester went 3-for-3 with a stolen base. Kyle Flanders was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

The game got interesting in the seventh inning, however, as the Mariners mounted a comeback, scoring eight runs in the inning, but M-P got the final out with bases loaded to take the win.

Marysville plays at Oak Harbor April 1.
