MARYSVILLE — Tomahawks coach Robert Sherry is having a hard time figuring out just how the Wesco North is going to shake out on the tennis court in 2010.
But the uncertainty doesn’t quell his excitement about his team’s capability.
“It will be interesting to see how some of the guys handle this season,” Sherry said. “We’re a young team, and our depth isn’t quite what it used to be, but we are returning a solid core of guys.”
That all starts with No. 1 starter Corey Coombs, who finished fourth in the division and fifth in districts, which was just two spots away from the state tournament.
“Corey’s a really hard worker and he’s fast, and he’s just a great competitive match player,” Sherry said. “But he’s also put in a lot of work in the offseason. He’s developed some new things and he’s not just a fast, defensive player anymore. He’s added a few new tricks to his bag, but at No. 1 in this league you are going to need them.”
Which is where Sherry’s uncertainty about this season comes from, as the Wesco North has realigned and four teams come from the South to play during the regular season, three of which were the top teams in their division.
“It’s going to be difficult this year because you throw in Jackson, Edmonds-Woodway and Kamiak and we don’t usually play them until the postseason, so it’s hard to tell what’s going to happen,” Sherry said.
But confidence is brewing as the Tommies also bring back senior Sam Josephsen and juniors Jared Randall, Chris Rasmussen and Andrew Vander Stoep, along with Ben Rumsey to create an experienced core that helped Marysville-Pilchuck to a 9-6 record last season.
“The challenge will be seeing how well we can get the rest of the guys to fill in,” Sherry said. “And that’s something we’re still working on, just figuring out who goes where.”
