MARYSVILLE — Sometimes breaking a tradition is a good thing.

The Tomahawks wrestling team didn’t want to repeat the performance of the past two seasons against Stanwood, where the dual was decided by the final match.

And with a 52-16 win Jan. 5, there was no danger of that happening.

“They beat us last year, and we beat them the year before,” said Marysville-Pilchuck coach Craig Iverson. “We know their program pretty well and it’s nice to get a win over a neighbor.”

Making a statement early, the Tomahawks scored six pins in the first nine matches to take a 34-6 lead. There was much drama in the matches as all but one of the seven total Marysville pins came in the third period.

“You get a lot of momentum and that helps,” Iverson said about getting pins late. “When things go well, guys have more energy down to the end. When things aren’t going so good, it’s hard to keep that going.”

Those late efforts were exemplified by the heavyweight match between Zach Schumann and Michael Randall with the Marysville junior forcing a pin fall from an arm bar in 4:46 with neither wrestler scoring a point.

“I was trying to get it the whole time,” Schumann said. “We were binding elbows and I guess he just got tired.”

Other M-P pins came from Marcus Haughlan (5:12) at 152 pounds, Cole Cushing (5:11) at 171, Jake Carlton (3:50) at 189, Luis Cardona (4:53) at 112 and Ruben Escalante (4:07) at 119.

“Marcus’ pin was a real lift for us and kind of got it started,” Iverson said. “It was a good match for him.”

Haughlan scored a pin in the third round on Cody Stone with the score 3-6 as the first M-P pin. The match started at the 145-pound weight class.

Other Tomahawk winners include Brian Donaldson (10-3) at 152 pounds, Brandon Blevins (3-0) at 125 pounds and Luke Shumaker (6-1) at 135 pounds.

The Tomahawks improve on their already impressive start this season, with a 7-1 record.
