SILVERDALE — Lakewood’s bid for a state title was quashed Nov. 9 in dramatic fashion against a familiar foe.

The Cougars returned to Silverdale Stadium, where they captured the school’s first state tournament victory in girls soccer a year ago, but weren’t as fortunate the second time around, losing to Klahowya 1-0 in overtime.

“That just goes to show you that you can’t really start the intensity and stop it when you want,” said Lakewood coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth. “We didn’t really push it until the last 20 minutes (of regulation) and you’ve got to hand it to Klahowya — they had us on our heels for a lot of the match.”

The first-round match was tied 0-0 at the end of regulation, despite a flurry of Lakewood scoring opportunities. The Cougars had a handful of shots inside the penalty box in the final 10 minutes, but couldn’t connect.

“We thought we were going to get one there,” Wohlgemuth said. “We had enough chances.”

But the match went to overtime, and the Eagles scored in the 82nd minute from a 25-yard shot by Ashley Mjor that was placed perfectly into the far upper corner.

“That was a great shot — that is probably the only place that (goalkeeper) Miranda (Head) is going to get beat,” Wohlgemuth said.

Lakewood defeated Klahowya 2-1 in 2009 on a second-half goal by Abby Burke. Making it to the second round at state, along with two victories against defending state champion Archbishop Murphy this season, a 17-2-1 record and the school’s first conference championship gave the Cougars cause to dream for a state title.

“It’s disappointing because we thought we were going to take another step, only losing a few seniors last year and finishing the way we did,” Wohlgemuth said.

Lakewood had arguably the best chance to score in the 28th minute, when senior Alisha Stott’s shot bounced off of Eagles goalkeeper Cassondra Dick, who stumbled while trying to retrieve the loose ball, leaving the net wide open. Cougars junior Arianna Barrio got a shot off, but it was deflected to teammate Miriah Smith, a senior, who also took a shot, but it was also deflected by a defender just before crossing the plane.

Mjor’s golden goal sent the Cougars off the field in tears as the Eagles celebrated, marking the first time an opponent had scored on the Cougars in seven overtime matches this season.

“We really just wanted to make it into the final weekend (of state) and see what happened,” said Wohlgemuth. “It’s disappointing now, but we’ll be able to eventually be able to look at this season and be really proud of our accomplishments.”
