Youth delivers Arlington CC a win

MARYSVILLE — The North County Invite shakes up the cross country calendar a little bit and often to surprising results.

Rather than ask schools to break their roster of runners down by varsity and junior varsity, boys and girls, runners at Cedarcrest Golf Course competed by grade level.

Such a division of athletes allows talented young runners to make a bigger contribution to their team score. It was by that formula that the Arlington boys edged 20 other teams to win the boys title in the Oct. 16 meet.

While Arlington senior Sean Gregory was predictably strong for the Eagles, placing fourth in the seniors’ contest with a time of 16:49.54, freshman Kevin Krogmann proved a key player in Arlington’s placement as well, taking third place with an 18-minute performance. Sophomores James Clark, Jacob Fure and Devin Swanson also had notable appearances in their race. Clark took 7th in 17:44.43, Fure was ninth in 17:57.49 and Swanson was 11th in 18:03.98.

On the very clustered girls side, Arlington finished in sixth place, one point behind Snohomish and Cedarcrest, who tied for fourth place. Safa Pinkens took fifth place in the junior race, while sophomores Kristin Wreggelsworth, Katie Anderson and Bryna Prause finished 7-8-9 in their contest. Freshman Kyle Kilmer was also a top finisher, running in 10th place in the first race with a time of 22:17.

The Marysville boys finished tied for eighth place with Monroe. They were led by senior Ryan Lanphere’s 16:38 time, good for third place in the senior race, while Josh Laquian finished in sixth place in the junior race. The girls were also eighth, with three appearances in the top 10. Lauren Ainsworth placed fourth in the senior race, turning in a time of 20:30. Junior Kaylie Kimmell and freshman Zoe Gibson placed ninth in their respective contests. Kimmell ran a time of 20:39 and Gibson 21:55.

While Lakewood also competed at Cedarcrest Golf Course, they held their varsity runners. Freshman Kris Mugrage had the best time and showing for a Lakewood boy, running a 19:08 for 13th place, while sophomore Aisha Butler led the girls in a time of 23:50, good for 27th place.
