MARYSVILLE — While Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt stole the show with his world-record performance in the 100- and 200-meter dashes Aug. 17 and 20 at the IAAF World Championships, at least one American athlete in Berlin had ties to Marysville.

Former Tomahawk and Boise State discus thrower Jarred Rome qualified for the event finals Aug. 18, throwing 65.51 meters, or 214-9, for the second-best performance in his qualifying group and fourth overall. In the next day’s finals, though, he was unable to match that effort, placing 11th overall, with a best throw on three attempts of 62.49 meters, or 204-10.

“I felt great yesterday. My legs felt great. My technique felt good. Everything felt good. Then today, nothing felt good. I couldn’t even hit one throw,” Rome said in a statement after the event. “I had high expectations and I don’t even know what happened.”

He hit a mark of 58.48 meters on his first throw in finals and scratched his third. The top eight competitors after three throws got three more. German Robert Harting won the event on his sixth throw with a mark of 69.43 meters (227-8), besting Pole Piotr Malachowski, who had three throws over 68 meters but topped out at 69.15 (226-9). American teammate Casey Malone placed fifth.
