LAKE GOODWIN – Marysville Fire District crews were dispatched shortly after 2 p.m., Jan. 22, to reports that a plane had crashed and was upside down in Lake Goodwin.

According to Kristen Thorstenson, Marysville Fire District Public Information Officer/Education Specialist, it was reported that two people were in the plane – one adult and one child. The adult was able to get out. Bystanders were the first to get to the plane and made several attempts to get the young boy out.

The Snohomish County Technical Water Rescue Team also responded and extricated the 6-year-old boy from the plane. He had been submerged for approximately 40 minutes in 41 degree water. He was transported to the Colby Campus in Everett in critical condition where he passed away at approximately 7:15 p.m.

According to Lt. Rodney Rochon, of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office,the plane was one of three float planes landing on Lake Goodwin. The crashed plane was piloted by a 55-year-old male who was the father of the victim.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board with assistance from the Snohomish County Technical Water Rescue Team. The Washington Department of Ecology also responded to mitigate any potential environmental hazards.
