After getting off to a rough start, the Lakewood football crew rebounded to win the 7-on-7 passing tournament they hosted July 26.

The Cougars lost their first three games in round-robin play, falling to Issaquah, King’s and Bothell before coming back to defeat Kamiak in the fourth game.

Bothell and Issaquah emerged from the seeding games with the best records, going 4-0 and 3-1 respectively. Bothell was unable to stay for the playoff portion of the tournament though and became disqualified for the tournament championship, leaving Issaquah with the top seed in the second half of the tourney.

Lakewood, King’s and Kamiak, all at 1-3, went into a tiebreaker to seed for the last three slots. Lakewood won the second seed, beating third-seed King’s by several touchdowns in the first playoff meeting, according to Lakewood coach Dan Teeter.

Fourth-seed Kamiak narrowly fell to Issaquah, losing by a point and setting up a Lakewood-Issaquah final.

The host team led 17-14 going into the half and neither team could be stopped in the second half. With less than a minute left to play, Issaquah took a 35-31 lead. Lakewood drove down to the 10-yard line with one play left.

“On what appeared to be the final play, Justin Lane threw a pass to Sam Johnston for what appeared to be a winning TD,” Teeter said. “The play was so close, that both sides thought that they had won. To avoid a controversial ending to a great day, it was agreed upon to replay the final down.”

On the replay, Lane found receiver Jordan Stauffer in the back of the endzone for the game-winning score.

Stauffer was named the tournament offensive MVP. Bothell’s Kurt Stottlemyer took defensive honors.
