MARYSVILLE — The girls of Grace Academy held a brief first-quarter lead but couldn’t overcome Northwest Yeshiva as the Lady Eagles fell 44-27 at home.

Junior forward Sarah Wennersten led her team with 10 points, but that’s a number the team never managed to reach in any one quarter of the Dec. 2 game. The Eagles seemed to rebound well but lost possessions on offensive turnovers.

The 613s never went on long unanswered spells, with a seven-point run bridging the first and second quarters probably one of their longest. But they just seemed to score two baskets for every one by Grace and exploited fast-break opportunities.

The Grace girls had several four-point spurts, including two made free throws by freshman Kristen Musgrove followed by a fast-break basket by Wennersten, but by that time the Eagles already trailed 21-12.

Fellow freshman Sondra Cooper joined Musgrove with four points each while junior Bayley Galbreath had five. Wennersten was the only Grace player to break into double figures.

As more players get enough practices to become eligible, Grace hopes to improve their chances as they visit Tulalip Heritage Dec. 10.
