MARYSVILLE — The swimming JV championships mark the end of the season for a host of swimmers, but for a lucky few, it’s a chance to extend the season another week.

For the swimmers whose season ended with the Oct. 30 meet, their reward was the JV championship, with 398 points to runner-up Snohomish’s 319.

But two Tomahawk girls qualified for the district meet at Kamiak at the last possible opportunity, stepping up to the competition and shedding seconds to meet the district threshold.

Sophomore Mallory Hanson did it first for M-P. Hanson had gotten within seven-100ths of a second of the 1:15.00 time to qualify for districts in the 100 butterfly. Hanson shed half a second from that previous best to win the butterfly, edging teammate Ava Commissariat who finished second overall and in Hanson’s heat with a time of 1:17.37.

Then, later in the meet, freshman Geina Malavolti had a standout performance in the backstroke. Like Hanson, Malavolti had only a fraction of a second to lose. Instead, she improved by five seconds, swimming a 1:08.97 and moving up to the team’s second-fastest time in the event behind school record-holder Kami Girard.

“She smoked that time,” said M-P swim coach Jaci Legore Hodgins.

Two more swimmers earned wild-card slots to districts next week despite swimming just under district-qualifying times. With a 29.68 time in the 50 freestyle, junior Cassie Hathaway placed sixth for a wild-card berth. Fellow junior Julia Turner took fourth place in the 500 freestyle and her time of 6:58.07 — an 11-second improvement over her seed time — earned the team its other wild-card.

The Tomahawk JV squad also won two relays and placed second in the third, taking the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.
