Street closure
The city of Arlington has announced a temporary road closure for sanitary sewer main installation on West Avenue between Lebanon Street and Third Street. West will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 8. It may be closed again from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 9 if needed. The sidewalk on the west side of West Avenue will stay open during construction. Business access will be available during construction.

Local farmers join Highland Cattle Association
Dick and Marianne Carlson of Arlington have been accepted as members of the Northwest Highland Cattle Association. NWHCA members consist of over 85 ranches and farms across the Pacific Northwest dedicated to preserving the Highland breed of cattle. Highlands are easily recognized by their long horns and shaggy coats, and they are also prized for their ability to produce excellent grass-fed beef.
White Chuck
bridge opens
Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and the Federal Highways Administration will open White Chuck Bridge with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., Nov. 6. The bridge is 10 miles from Darrington off Mountain Loop Highway on Forest Service Road 22. The bridge spans the White Chuck River and gives access to a public boat launch on the north side of the river and the Gold Mountain area. It has been closed since 2003 when it was washed out by floods.

Calendar of events now available
The Snohomish County Tourism Bureau’s 2008 Fall — Winter Calendar of Events is now available. The calendar features a wonderful array of events, performing and visual arts, fairs, festivals, music, crafts, markets and attractions from October through March 2009.

Volunteers needed to prepare tax returns
United Way of Snohomish County will operate three Free Tax Preparation Centers from January 22 to April 15, 2009 to help low and middle-income families save the fee for preparing their income tax forms, file electronically and take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits. People filing taxes can also sign up for public benefits and learn how to make more money from their tax refunds.
It’s critical to have money in savings for a cushion in difficult times. United Way’s Free Tax Preparation Centers helped families claim $1.2 million in tax refunds last year. More than $8 million in earned income tax credits still goes unclaimed each year in Snohomish County. Volunteer tax preparers are helping low and moderate income working people file and get it back.
All volunteers will receive free training and be certified by the IRS. Free tax preparation centers are located in Everett, South Everett and Lynnwood. Volunteers who speak Spanish and Russian are greatly needed.

Tales of destruction
The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross will present a program Thursday, Nov. 6, bringing together Northwest Red Cross volunteers who left home to help others when disaster struck the Gulf Coast.
Disaster relief workers will tell in words and pictures of their experiences in the aftermath of Hurricanes Gustav Hanna and Ike.
The free event, open to the public, will be in the Boeing Room at Red Cross, 2530 Lombard Ave., Everett, beginning with a social at 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
