EVERETT — Purple power proved useless against the Tomahawk football team as Kamiak fell to M-P just as Lake Stevens had the week before.
Marysville defeated the Knights 43-14 at Goddard Stadium to improve to 7-0.
“It’s been a long time” since the Tomahawks had such a start, said coach Brandon Carson.
Once again, the running game carried M-P to victory. But with teams starting to focus on standout running back Austin Denton’s number 18 jersey, the rest of the Tomahawk backfield is stepping up to punish opposing defenses.
Denton added three touchdowns to the Tomahawk tally, but his 123 yards were eclipsed by senior teammate Caleb Posey, who carried the ball 11 times for 213 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow running back Ryan Sterley added another touchdown with 56 yards on just four carries.
Marysville and Kamiak traded touchdowns in the first quarter, but a blocked extra point ensured that the Tomahawks never trailed.
The Tomahawks added a second touchdown with 54 seconds left in the quarter. A long pass from Devin Peterson to Levi Cartas put M-P in Knights’ territory, while Sterley and Posey moved the down markers, setting up a Denton touchdown from one-yard out.
Sterley had a nice game for Marysville on the defensive side of the ball as well, picking off a Kamiak pass. The interception set up what would amount to the game-winning touchdown, which Sterley would carry in from six yards out as the offense took over. The Tomahawks led 21-6.
Posey’s two touchdowns came on each side of halftime. He carried the ball in with less than two minutes in the first half and M-P extended their lead by eight as Peterson scored the two-point conversion on a quarterback keeper.
Two and a half minutes into the second half, senior defensive back Andy Abadam intercepted Kamiak at the Tomahawk 25-yard line. On the next play, Posey ran 75 yards for the score and a 30-point Tommie lead.
Kamiak got the final score of the game with a touchdown in the fourth quarter but it was too little, too late.
Carson indicated after the game that the team won’t be resting on its laurels.
“I think we just need to continue to attack and improve,” he said. “If we win next week (against Monroe), we’re in a good position for league number one.”
