The 2011 Lakewood Hole in the Wall Invitational on Oct. 8, attracted a record 55 schools including ‘Iolani High School from Honolulu, which had to travel nearly 85 miles from Lakewood, Wash., near Tacoma, after their coach reserved a hotel there by mistake.
Marysville Getchell volleyball traveled to Mountlake Terrace’s Terraceum on Oct. 12 for a match against the Hawks, pitching strong comebacks in the second and third games but losing the match 3-0 to the fifth-place Wesco 3-A Hawks.
Fourth-place Marysville-Pilchuck (3-7 Wesco North, 4-7 overall) hit the road on Oct. 13 for a grudge match against the third-place (4-6, 4-7) Monroe Bearcats who had beaten the Tomahawks 4-2 in the season opener on Sept. 8.
Marysville-Pilchuck volleyball entered Oct. 10’s game against Arlington (0-4, 1-7) seeking to win with efficient ball management and scrappy defense.
Marysville-Pilchuck and Marysville Getchell, who usually compete as a tandem unit in girls’ swimming until this year, faced each other as well as host Oak Harbor Wildcats at Oak Harbor’s Vanderzicht Memorial Pool on Oct. 3. The Wildcats won 10 of 12 events in the meet, beating Pilchuck 140-39 and edging Getchell 137-44. Getchell grabbed the other two events but Pilchuck won its overall matchup against Getchell because of its higher average finish, 94-81.
An 11-year-old Marysville boy and his mother brought home the gold on Sept. 24 and 25 from 2011’s final Pacific Northwest Watercross race. Nathan Clements took first place in the Junior Ski class for both the weekend Lake Chelan Jet Fest event and the 2011 season tour.

Totem Middle School’s eighth-grade varsity football Thunderbirds are off to a 2-0 start in 2011 after suffering an 0-6 record in 2010. The team scored a 12-8 win over traditional powerhouse Stanwood on Sept. 28 to secure its first home win of the season by forcing timely turnovers and controlling the ball on offense.
