Thank you for featuring the student garden for the food bank on the front page of the Marysville Globe on July 30. It is exciting to receive fresh produce from these hardworking students and their teachers.

Steve Smith at Sunnyside Nursery did great work researching community gardens and preparing the land for the community garden. The Master Gardeners at Jennings Park also operate a garden in order to give fresh produce to the food bank.

Every week we receive lettuce, radishes, peas and a variety of other fresh vegetables to hand out to our clients.

Two master gardeners, Kari Black and Mary Oosterhof, even came to the food bank in May to show clients how to grow their own food in small spaces.

Sunnyside Nursery donated over $300 in plants and Ed Hume Seeds gave 200 seed packets. Thanks to their efforts and community seed donations, many of our clients have wonderful little gardens to harvest.

I urge everyone with an abundant garden or fruit tree to share your harvest with the food bank. Grab a few cans and boxes of food from your pantry, too. And please, think of us if you are able to help financially. We really need the community’s help raising the funds for the new food bank building. All donations help serve the hungry in our area.

The food bank is open to receive donations most mornings from 8 – 11 a.m. Produce donations need to be received a half hour before closing time. We are not open on Sundays and Wednesdays.
