Dr. Larry Nyland, Superintendent of the Marysville School District, recently announced his retirement effective at the end of the current school year. Praise for his efforts at improving instruction and test scores in the district will no doubt be heaped on him prior to his leaving, and Dr. Nyland’s hard work and dedication to his vision certainly deserve to be acknowledged.
On Oct. 13 Soroptimist International of Marysville welcomed friends and families to our annual benefit auction. The evening was fun and a financial success. The money raised will allow us to continue giving to organizations in our community like the Marysville Food Bank, the YMCA, Kloz 4 Kids, Domestic Violence Services, and many others and to also fund the Soroptimists’ signature project, college scholarships for high school girls.
The Marysville Community Food Bank wishes to extend a huge thank you to the organizers and volunteers of the Helping Hands, Linking Arms Food Drive that concluded last weekend. And, a big thank you to the citizens of Marysville for the tremendous support of this effort.
I, like so many of you, have a parent in a local retirement/assisted living facility. The facility is a wonderful place filled with delightful residents, all of whom have ways of becoming an extended member of your family. They are a generation most have forgotten, but trust me, this generation should never be forgotten. They are the generation that made this country and we owe them so much — most of all we owe them our thanks and respect.

For 25-plus years it was my honor to serve as the Managing Director/Grand Parade Director for the Marysville Strawberry Festival. My job was to make sure events were all scheduled and everything was in place in time to welcome event participants and spectators to our community the third week in June of each year. This was no small task, but one I took to heart and totally enjoyed. At the end of each event, I would sit for a moment, take a deep breath and say to myself, “We did it and it was just great!”
On behalf of the Lakewood School District Staff and Board of Directors, I want to sincerely thank the voters, volunteers and elected officials for their active support of our students and schools. The quality of our communities is inextricably connected to the quality of our schools. With the support received from this past levy election, that connection is strengthened.
As I sit in my office, I am looking out at the beautiful blue sky and the sun is shining so bright, I can’t help but think of “Summer.” Summer arrives on June 20, with it also comes all types of community activities. This letter is in reference to one of those longstanding events and one in particular which has brought so much enjoyment to so many, and it may very well be no more unless people get involved.
Congratulations to the many school districts in Snohomish County that recently passed their replacement levy elections. My district, Lakewood, has an election set for April 17.

The outrage over the recent incidents of child abuse at two major, high profile university athletic departments continues to fill the national print and electronic media.
Some of you might remember what it stands for, Throw the Hypocritical Rascals Out. It’s time to act on this locally. The empire of Marysville has a great alternative for leadership. We have found the right person for mayor of our city, he is Kelly Wright. How could anyone vote back into office the people that created our problems?
Recently, while I was out for an afternoon shopping expedition, I made the grievous error of crossing State Street at 94th (I was leaving the west side of State and crossing to the Northeast corner of 94th), as you may or may not know there is no crosswalk there.
