ARLINGTON — A fourth-grader at Kent Prairie Elementary School, Lily Hanna was honored Monday, June 15, for her prize-winning poster for Snohomish County’s Greening Our County contest. She is among six young artists from across Snohomish County who have been selected in the county’s National County Government Week’s “Greening Our Future” poster contest.

The students were asked to create artwork depicting their ideas on how to conserve our natural resources for generations to come. The entries were judged on creativity and how well the theme was depicted.

The county received more than 500 entries.

“I am very grateful for the Council’s continued support of this annual event,” said Kathryn Bratcher, clerk to the County Council.

“This contest is very valuable as an outreach mechanism to make local children aware of Snohomish County and the services we provide. Hopefully their positive interaction with the Council now will encourage them to visit us in the future, perhaps at a public hearing or maybe even a field trip from their school where we will have more opportunities to spark their interest in county government and perhaps recruit future county employees and government leaders.”

Prizes include admission to Imagine Children’s Museum, admission to the Evergreen State Fair this summer and an Evergreen Fair backpack filled with a t-shirt, toys and other prizes for all six winners.

Awards were presented individually in classrooms during the past week and the classmates of the winners all got Happy Meals donated by the McDonald’s corporation, Bratcher said.
