MARYSVILLE – The Maryfest king and a track star are the Boy and Girl of the Month from Marysville Getchell High School.
Nathan Weller and Kiarra Green were selected by panelists from the Marysville Kiwanis and Soroptimist clubs Tuesday.
Green is a standout sprinter on the MG track team, making first team All-Wesco, and she also is captain of the basketball team.
She led the Martin Luther King Jr. assembly last year, and she also is an ASB officer.
She hopes to run track next year at Washington State University. She wants to get a biochemistry or biomedical degree and then continue on to become a pediatric surgeon. After that she said she would like to work for an organization such as Doctors without Borders to help children in other countries. Eventually she wants to have her own practice for low-income families.
She also mentioned that she also wants to be involved in government in the future so she plans to take many political science courses, too.
Green is in Running Start this year because of MG’s new policy that students can go to community college and still be active at the high school.
She has a 3.966 grade point average and works at The Creamery Co.
Green also volunteers about 10 hours a month as a child advocate for a women’s shelter in Lynnwood. Weller, meanwhile, has donated hundreds of hours this past year to the Marysville Strawberry Festival alone, appearing in parades from Oregon to Canada.
He wants to be a high school band teacher, but before that he plans to go on a two-year mission trip after graduation before attending Brigham Young University in Provo, UT.
He is very involved with the marching band and pep band playing the clarinet, being a drum major and being on the drumline. He also plays piano.
He also is very involved in the Boy Scouts. He hopes to become an Eagle Scout, but is still planning a project.
Weller has a 3.933 grade point average and has earned 30 college credits in Everett Community College’s College in the High School program. He is also on the school’s Hi-Q team and its first Knowledge Bowl team that competed this fall.
For community service, Weller has been a Scout and Pinewood Elementary camp counselor.
