Marysville Soroptimists ‘Get Acquainted,’ get ready for ‘Spooktacular’

MARYSVILLE — Soroptimist International of Marysville conducted another open house Sept. 16 to "Get Acquainted" with the local community, and according to Marysville Soroptimist President Renae James, it's already yielded results.

MARYSVILLE — Soroptimist International of Marysville conducted another open house Sept. 16 to “Get Acquainted” with the local community, and according to Marysville Soroptimist President Renae James, it’s already yielded results.

“We had 16 members and 12 guests show up,” James said. “Three of those guests signed up that night and three more have since mailed in to apply for membership. We already had 25 members before that.”

The Marysville Soroptimists can use those members this fall, not only with activities such as serving up breakfast alongside Marysville Kiwanians at the “Oyster Run” that will meet at Sound Harley-Davidson in Smokey Point Sept. 26, but also with its Halloween-themed “Spooktacular” auction fundraiser Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the Smokey Point Medallion Hotel.

“Costumes are encouraged but not mandatory,” said James, who added that the Tulalip Resort Hotel and Casino will be hosting the Soroptimist International of the Northwest Region District meeting Oct. 16-17. “We’ve never hosted one of these meetings in Marysville before.”

Soroptimist International is a volunteer service organization for business and professional women. Soroptimists volunteer their talents and energy to help women and girls live their dreams, every day, by giving them the resources to create positive change for themselves, their families and their communities.

Some of the community projects they support are Hospice, YMCA’s “Invest In Youth,” the Marysville Community Food Bank, the Marysville Historical Society, the Marysville Library and Relay for Life.

Marysville Soroptimists’ hands-on projects include giving Christmas stockings and Easter baskets to Quilceda Meadows, a group home for developmentally disabled adults. They’ve also sponsored the Christmas “Special People In Need” dance held at the Marysville YMCA. At the Marysville Soroptimists’ annual holiday parties, they’ve collected underwear and socks for Kloz 4 Kidz, as well as blankets for St. Joseph’s House.

Marysville Soroptimists likewise help collect food for Operation Marysville Community Christmas and sponsor the “Hams for the Hungry” food drive for the Easter holiday.

Programs they support on a federation and international level include the Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence, Soroptimist STOP Trafficking, Soroptimist Disaster Aid for Women and Girls, and “Project Sierra: A Family and a Future.”

“We’re off to a great start,” James said. “We have women with excellent ideas who are ready to make a difference.”
