Two Arlington artists who work in wood, Mark Lowe and Lucinda VanValkenburg, are showing work in The Mathematics of Art show that opens May 7 at the at the Everett Center for the Arts in the Monte Cristo Hotel in Everett.

Presented by the Arts Council of Snohomish County through June 25, an opening reception is from 5 – 8 p.m., Thursday, May 7.

VanValkenburg and Lowe join more than 20 artists from around Puget Sound who have created patterned prints, quilts, collages, glass, sculptures, perspective drawings and other mathematical calculations for “The Mathematics of Art.”

This exhibit showcases the interplay of math and art, said the gallery director Carie Collver.

“Exhibit signage will include how math was applied, used or incorporated into the artwork,” Collver added.

Art in Education field trips made possible by co-sponsors Bank of America Charitable Foundation, The Boeing Company, Target Inc. and H’Arts patrons will enable more than 2,500 children from around Snohomish County to share this rich multi-sensory experience with the guidance of an art docent. They will also have the opportunity to work with artists to create their own art, coming away with basic design principles, such as balance and repetition and how it relates to math. The children will explore the design elements of shape, line, color and texture.

At the May 7 reception, several artists in the exhibit will be demonstrating and explaining how math is incorporated into their artwork.

Admission to the show is free, at 1507 Wall St., in downtown Everett. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
