MARYSVILLE – Christopher Leonard has had a lot to smile about lately.

The Marysville Getchell High School senior was recently Boy of the Month. Just this weekend he found out he was named a King for the Senior Prom. And Monday, he couldn’t wipe the huge grin off his face after being named a “Smile Maker” by Delta Dental of Washington in a surprise ceremony at school.

Kristi Ellefson, marketing manager, said the company has been honoring people who are doing good works monthly for about three years. “So much in the world is depressing,” she said.

Ellefson said they found out about Leonard from a story in The Marysville Globe. They discovered Leonard overcame a severe head injury from a bicycle accident years ago. “He is selfless, wants to help others, and makes them smile,” Ellefson said.

She said Leonard is different than many people his age, who are caught up in themselves.

“He is not like that at all,” she said.

One thing they liked about his story is that is sometimes brings red velvet cookies to school to share with classmates. So the “Smile Power” team brought cookies for him to share. He also likes movies so he received prizes related to that theme.

The Tooth Fair made the announcement, saying Leonard went “above and beyond” in thinking of others. Leonard did not seem that surprised when his name was called as the honoree. “I thought with my luck, it’s me,” he said, referring the roll he’s on.

His dad, Doug, said, “It’s pretty cool,” and mom Sherry added, “We’re so happy for him.”

His mother added they also are proud of him being prom king.

“There is one king and queen for each learning community” at MG, she said. “That’s why he’s been fighting so hard” this year to convince the Marysville School District to keep the four academies there.

“Another sign of how selfless he is,” Ellefson said.
