‘Sound of Music’ rings through Marysville=Pilchuck High School auditorium

"The Sound of Music" is entering its second week at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, and the student actors are excited to share the results of their four months of rehearsals with the community.

MARYSVILLE – “The Sound of Music” is entering its second week at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, and the student actors are excited to share the results of their four months of rehearsals with the community.

Madison Pickard, 15, plays Maria Rainer, who becomes the governess for the von Trapp family, while Malene Hundley, 13, plays Brigitta, one of the seven von Trapp children, and Scott Foss, 17, plays Max Detweiler.

Both Foss and Hundley followed siblings into doing drama, while Pickard spoke fondly of the friendships she’s built over the course of doing a number of plays. Pickard appreciates the dual plot lines in “The Sound of Music,” of Maria falling in love with Captain von Trapp while the Nazis are taking over Austria and pressing the Captain to rejoin them.

“It’s hard to play, not only because of the time period, but also because we’re playing adults,” Pickard said.

Like Pickard, Hundley and Foss have done their best to map out what sort of people their characters are beyond the script, even as they strive to stay true to how the characters are written.

“Another actor and I have decided that our two characters hate each other, even though we’re not sure if that’s in the script,” Foss laughed. “I try to make my scenes nonchalant, since I share a lot of scenes with the Captain and I don’t want to be all serious.”

“The characters are really strong and the acting is really good, so it’s really believable,” Hundley said.

“It’s an optimistic story,” Foss said. “You won’t regret watching it.”

“The Sound of Music” at M-PHS represents the culmination of four rehearsals a week, each lasting more than three hours, since the start of January. All three actors interviewed were quick to credit M-PHS drama teacher Roy Klementsen with giving his time and money to help make the production happen. They also cited the number of volunteers, including the music director and choreographer, who have donated their services for free.

“We want to thank everyone who’s part of the show for making it possible, including the audience,” Hundley said.

The next performances of “The Sound of Music” kick off at 7:30 p.m. in the M-PHS auditorium April 29-30, and May 1.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for students with Associated Student Body cards, children 5 years and under, and senior citizens.
