Saturday, Jan. 24:
Hadley Hall, at 18513 59th Ave. NE in Arlington, is offering a basic first aid course from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a CPR and AED certification class from 1-4 p.m.
Participants in the first aid course can learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of injuries and sudden illness, and receive crucial information about how to deal with emergencies. The cost is $30, or $25 if you’re also taking the CPR class.
The CPR class teaches the chain of survival, activation of 911, emergency response, airway obstruction and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It also offers information on adult heart attacks and strokes, as well as AED certification. This basic certification conforms to new 2010 national standards, and is based on the same scientific guidelines and treatment recommendations used by the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. The cost is $30.
Both courses are open to adults and youths aged 12 years and older. Register with the Arlington Recreation Department at 360-403-3448.
That same Saturday, the Red Curtain Arts Center, at 1410 Grove St. in Marysville, is hosting two painting classes.
“Mom, Me & Monet” runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and is open to moms, grandmothers, dads and doting aunties, as well as their favorite youngsters. Working together, they’ll be able to create impressionist-inspired painting for only $35, including all supplies.
From 4 to 7 p.m., attendees are invited to grab their girlfriends, work colleagues, sweethearts and sisters, to enjoy the third “Paint & Sip” session. Participants can create paintings while sharing wine, refreshments and laughs. $35 includes all supplies and the first glass of wine.

Sunday, Jan. 25:
A four-week course on “Learning the Trails of the Mt. Loop Scenic Highway” kicks off from 1-3 p.m. at 154 W. Cox St. in Arlington. Classes will cover hiking basics such as mapping, safety, wilderness rules and locating trailheads. Discover the many types of trails on the Mountain Loop.
The cost is $10 per person for each class. Walk in or pre-register with the Arlington Recreation Department at 360-403-3448.
Thursday, Jan. 29:
Arlington schools superintendent Kristine McDuffy will deliver the seventh annual State of the District Address at 6 p.m. in the Pioneer Elementary School library, at 8213 Eaglefield Dr. in Arlington.
McDuffy will report on student achievement, the budget, facilities, stewardship activities and continuous improvement. Following her presentation, participants will be able to talk with cabinet members about finance, teaching and learning, operations and human resource/employee services.
Friday, Jan. 30:
Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring will deliver the State of the City address to the Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce in the Canoes Cabaret Room of the Tulalip Resort Casino from 7:30-9 a.m.
Nehring will share an overview of the city’s key accomplishments from the past year, as well as a brief review of its Budget and a look forward at what’s to come in 2015.
The cost is $23 with advance registration for Marysville Tulalip Chamber Members, or $28 at the door and for non-members. A buffet breakfast is included.
