ARLINGTON — The clock was closing in on four minutes left in the first half. Arlington hadn’t scored in over seven minutes.

What had been a 9-2 Arlington lead became a three-point deficit as Oak Harbor post Jennifer Jansen scored six points in a 10-0 run to the lead by the Wildcats.

But with a three-pointer by Arlington senior Kyra Prause, the Eagles were quickly back in the game, battling through five lead changes in the second quarter.

With the two teams tied for second place in conference standings, it was bound to be that kind of game.

Both teams had big performers in the Feb. 4 meeting, which Arlington went on to win 48-39. As 6-2 Wildcat Jansen’s game cooled, Oak Harbor got a big contribution from 4-11 guard Cheyenne Tubo, who had three treys and 14 points against Arlington.

To counter Tubo, enter Arlington junior Kandace Evans.

“Kandace Evans did a great job defending that girl,” said Arlington coach Nathan Davis.

Evans came off the bench in the second half, slowing down Tubo after senior Sheryl Scheppele got in early foul trouble.

Additionally, she added seven points in the second half where Arlington came out looking for a spark.

“We were trying to get more energy up in the third quarter and we switched defenses, which energized us a bit,” Davis added.

As a result, Arlington out-rebounded Oak Harbor 41-26 and dominated the boards in the second half. Junior post Ginny Wilson had eight rebounds, including five defensive ones in the second half that were felt as the teams battled from a 32-32 tie going into the fourth quarter.

Oak Harbor took small leads in the fourth quarter, but nothing Arlington couldn’t answer. Finally, after a string of missed free throws failed to break a 36-36 tie, Wilson scored to give Arlington their first lead of the quarter. The Wildcats never led again as four more players helped the Eagles maintain their lead.

Junior Quinn Kesselring, whose field goal broke the lead into two-possession territory, had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
