TULALIP — At approximately 10:23 p.m. on Friday, May 17, multiple calls were made to 911 from residents in the area of the 900 block of 43rd Street NW in Tulalip, which is near to Potlatch Beach, and adjacent to the Priest Point area of Puget Sound. Multiple residents reported hearing someone from the water screaming for help.

Tulalip Fisheries and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Marine Services Units responded and searched the area with boats, while a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard searched by air.

Shortly after 11 p.m., a woman was found in the water holding a life jacket. She was rescued and transported to a local hospital for hypothermia. The woman, who is in her mid-40s and is associated with an address in the Mountlake Terrace area, is believed to have non-life threatening injuries.

Approximately one-half mile from the woman, rescuers then found an overturned boat, approximately 10 feet in length. A search was conducted through the night, looking for the woman’s male companion. A deceased man was located on a beach near Mission Walk around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. The age, town of residence, and cause of death of that man will later be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

There were only two people in the boat when this incident occurred. The cause of the incident is not yet known as the investigation is ongoing by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. Additional agencies that assisted overnight included North Snohomish County Fire and Tulalip Police.
