Kmart closing in Marysville
MARYSVILLE — The last Kmart in Snohomish County is shutting down.
Store closing signs went up last week at the store at 9623 State Ave. in Marysville. On Monday, the store was packed with people looking for bargains.
The store plans to close in mid-July.
The store employs 47 people who are mostly part-time or hourly. Those employees will be eligible to receive severance and can apply for open positions at other Sears or Kmart stores, said Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for the Sears Holdings Corp.
Sears Holdings announced in April that it planned to close 68 Kmarts and 10 Sears stores this summer to offset losses. At the time, the Marysville store wasn’t on the list of closures.
Schools change water fixtures
MARYSVILLE — Workers have replaced fixtures at two Marysville schools where slightly elevated levels of lead in the water had been found May 9.
Three water taps at Marysville-Pilchuck High School and one at Marshall Elementary School were unusable and replaced, school district spokeswoman Emily Wicks said.
Also, one sink faucet was to be changed in an outbuilding at the Marysville School District Educational Service Center.
The actions came as a result of voluntary tests conducted May 3 at every campus following reports of high lead levels in water at several elementary schools and a handful of older homes in Tacoma.
Workers collected 220 samples from drinking fountains and kitchen sinks at the district’s 11 elementary schools, four middle schools and eight high schools. Of those, five were found with lead levels higher than the 15 parts per billion threshold for remedial action established by the Washington State Department of Health.

The incident happened just before noon at a home along 54th Drive. The police activity caused a lockdown at nearby Marysville-Pilchuck High School.
