District, teachers reach tentative agreement

MARYSVILLE — After what was apparently a marathon meeting that ended in the wee hours of Aug. 22, the Marysville School District and its teachers reached a tentative agreement on a three-year contract.

In a press release, Assistant Superintendent Gail Miller said the Marysville Education Association will vote on the pact sometime this week, just prior to the start of school on Sept. 2.

The Marysville School Board of Directors will get their chance to vote on the contract at their next scheduled board meeting, Miller added.

That meeting should happen Sept. 8.

“Negotiations addressed some challenging issues and were done in the spirit of collaboration and problem solving,” Miller said, “resulting in a tentative agreement supported by both bargaining units.”

Miller did not return a phone call requesting further comment. Details of the pact were not released pending discussions by both the union and the school board.

The teachers’ current contract expires Aug. 31. In 2003, when the union and the district failed to reach initial agreement, the teachers launched what is commonly thought to have been the longest school strike in Washington history.
