MARYSVILLE – City officials expect the Fourth of July to go out with a bang this year.
And that could mean many more tickets being issued than in the past.
This will be the last July 4 residents can shoot off personal fireworks within the city limits, after the City Council passed a new law a few months ago.
Fire Chief Martin McFalls said staffing will be increased on the Fourth.
“We expect to be fairly busy,” he said.
Police Chief Rick Smith asks residents to be good neighbors.
“The Fourth of July should be a time for our community to celebrate,” Smith said. “When people use illegal fireworks, or shoot off fireworks in a way that can hurt people or damage property, it can ruin the holiday for everyone.”
As a result of complaints like those to the city, the council passed the ordinance.
“Safe and sane” fireworks are legal to discharge within Marysville July 4 only from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. People shooting them off earlier and later than the legal time was a main reason they will be illegal in 2017.
Six stands set up in Marysville by nonprofit organizations will be selling those types of fireworks.
Possession or discharge of illegal fireworks, such as some of those sold on the Tulalip Reservation, can result in being ticketed. Use of legal fireworks outside the specified time July 4 can also result in a ticket.
Police will have extra patrols throughout the city during the days leading up to and on the Fourth. People found in violation will be ticketed.
McFalls added, “It’s always a better idea to attend a community fireworks display than to set them off at home.”
While Marysville does not have a public display, Arlington does as part of its 4th of July Festival at 9 p.m. on the east side of airport near the Boys and Girls Club. Also that day there is a Pancake Breakfast, triathlon, auction and Duck Dash at Haller Park, along with a kiddies and grand parades downtown, and a carnival, also at the airport.
Wherever you shoot off fireworks, here are some safety tips:
•Read all instructions and warnings
•Have a hose and bucket of water nearby
•Light fireworks on a clear, flat surface
•Do not hold or lean over fireworks when discharging
